About Hundley Woodworking!
A life shaped by wood, design, and craftsmanship.
Meet Lucas Hundley
For Lucas J. Hundley, woodworking is more than the process of shaping wood. It is a lifelong exploration of material, form, and the relationship between an object and the person who lives with it.
Raised in the Blue Ridge Mountains of North Carolina, Lucas developed an interest in woodturning as a child. That early curiosity grew into a dedication to understanding the craft, learning its traditions, and discovering the possibilities that emerge when technical skill meets artistic vision.
While still in high school, Lucas received recognition from the American Association of Woodturners, including an education grant that allowed him to study in Yamanaka, Japan, and share ideas with Japanese woodturning artists.
He continued his education at Haywood Community College, earning an Associate Degree in Professional Woodworking, before pursuing a Bachelor of Fine Arts at the Appalachian Center for Craft at Tennessee Tech University.
These experiences helped shape his approach to woodworking: respect the material, understand the technique, and allow thoughtful design to guide the finished form.
Today, Lucas works from his studio in Jonas Ridge, North Carolina, near Pisgah National Forest. His work includes handturned wooden bowls, sculptural objects, custom furniture, and architectural woodwork.
Across each discipline, the intention remains the same: create something distinctive, well considered, and worthy of being part of someone's life.
Meet Crystal Hurt
Crystal Hurt joined Lucas Hundley in 2020, bringing with her a background in painting and design and a creative eye that would soon find a new home in the world of woodworking. Although she had little to no woodworking experience when she began, Crystal quickly discovered the satisfaction of transforming raw wood into beautifully crafted, functional pieces.
Her journey began with shaping chair parts, but it wasn't long before she found her way to the lathe and the art of woodturning. Today, turning is at the heart of much of her work, allowing her to explore the natural character, grain, and possibilities of wood. From shaping each piece to the careful process of sanding and finishing, Crystal brings patience, precision, and an appreciation for detail to every stage of the process.
Her artistic background continues to influence her woodworking in unexpected ways. Painting and design occasionally find their way into her pieces through decorative embellishments, adding another layer of creativity and individuality to the finished work. This blend of traditional artistic skills and hands-on craftsmanship gives Crystal a unique perspective, allowing her to approach each piece with both an artist's eye and a maker's touch.
The goal is not simply to make something new.
It is to make something worth keeping.
The belief behind the work
Good woodworking requires more than knowing how to use tools. It requires knowing when to make a cut, when to refine a form, how to respect the material, and how to recognize when a piece has reached its fullest expression.
The artistry: Custom woodturning, fine furniture, and architectural details.
The story: A lifelong woodworker with formal training, international experience, and deep Appalachian roots.
The experience: Personalized commissions for homeowners, interior designers, architects, and builders who value exceptional materials and one-of-a-kind work.
A handcrafted wooden bowl belongs just as naturally in an art gallery as it does in your home.
