The Art of Revealing What Is Already There.

A glance at our process

01. Understanding the Wood

Every piece begins with its own characteristics and story. Grain, color, figure, and natural variation influence the possibilities for the finished object.

Selecting and assessing the material helps determine the direction of the work and the story it will tell.

04. Drying and Resting

The rough-turned piece is set aside to dry slowly. Depending on the wood and the desired result, this stage can take months or even years, allowing the material to stabilize before the next stage.

02. Shaping the Form

The lathe allows wood to be shaped into rounded, balanced forms. Each cut contributes to the profile, proportions, and overall character of the piece.

The maker must continually evaluate the form as it develops, making decisions that influence the final result.

05. Finishing the Piece

Once the wood is sufficiently dry, the piece returns to the lathe for its final shaping and to bring the original vision to life.

Surface preparation and finishing help reveal the wood's natural beauty and complete the object.

03. Refining the Details

Small details matter. The relationship between a rim, curve, base, and interior surface can change how a bowl looks and feels.

Refinement brings those elements into balance and helps the finished object express its intended character.

06. Ready to Be Lived With

The completed work brings together natural material, thoughtful form, and skilled craftsmanship. The tree’s history has been given a new life that can last for generations as an art piece or functional woodenware.

The Philosophy of Functional Art

Art does not have to be separate from daily life.

A handcrafted object can be appreciated for its form while still serving a purpose. Its beauty can come from its proportions, the character of its material, and the thoughtful decisions that shaped it.

That is the appeal of functional art: it brings the experience of craftsmanship into the spaces where people live.

Mass production offers consistency. Handcrafted work offers a different experience: the opportunity to appreciate the individual character of a material and the decisions made by the person shaping it.

Lucas's approach celebrates that individuality.

The goal is to create work that feels at home in a gallery, on a carefully styled shelf, or in the middle of a well-used dining table.
